Bring Your Own Keys: Keep Your Provider Setup and Use Edgee

With Edgee, you typically get a single API key that lets you call multiple AI providers through one unified gateway.
This simplifies integrations and gives you a consistent interface across models and providers.
But sometimes teams want to keep using their own provider credentials.
They may already have:
- existing billing relationships with providers
- enterprise or negotiated contracts
- access to custom or fine-tuned models
Switching to a new gateway shouldn’t mean losing those advantages.
That’s where Bring Your Own Keys (BYOK) comes in.
Use Your Own Provider Keys
Bring Your Own Keys allows you to register your existing provider API keys directly inside Edgee.
For example, you can add your OpenAI or Anthropic API keys and configure Edgee to use them when executing requests.
This means you keep:
- your own billing
- your existing contracts
- access to custom or fine-tuned models
At the same time, your requests still go through Edgee.
Keep Your Providers, Add the Edgee Layer
Even when requests are executed using your own provider credentials, Edgee still sits in front as the gateway.
This means you can continue to benefit from Edgee features such as:
- Token compression
- Request routing
- Observability
- Usage tracking
Your providers remain the same, but Edgee adds an operational layer on top.
Linking BYOK to Edgee API Keys
Edgee applications authenticate using Edgee API keys.
With BYOK, you can link an Edgee API key to a BYOK configuration.
Once linked, every request made with that Edgee API key will automatically use the associated provider credentials behind the scenes.
From your application’s point of view, nothing changes.
Your app still sends requests to Edgee using the same API key, but under the hood, Edgee routes the request using the provider key defined in the BYOK configuration.
This allows you to control which credentials your applications use without changing your integration.
If you'd like to see how to configure BYOK step-by-step, watch the video walkthrough below.
In this video, we show how to add a provider API key (creating a BYOK configuration) and how to link it to existing Edgee API keys.
A Flexible Way to Use Edgee
Bring Your Own Keys allows you to integrate Edgee into your existing AI infrastructure without replacing your provider setup.
You keep your providers, contracts, and models — while benefiting from Edgee’s gateway capabilities.
It’s a simple way to add compression, routing, observability, and usage tracking to your AI stack while continuing to use your own provider credentials.
